Students coming from Guadalajara are assessed in groups at the end of January each year and can be assessed individually after that time if space permits. Students coming from outside of our city will be assessed upon their arrival.

The following is some information that may help you understand how the assessment will be structured:

All children will be evaluated on developmentally appropriate skills in six learning areas. We will assess children's cognitive, language, math, fine and gross motor skills as well as their social and emotional development. All assessments are done in a group setting for several reasons. We believe children will enjoy the activity more and be able to learn a little about our school at the same time. We will also learn much more about your child by being able to observe him/her in a class situation and for a longer period of time. This longer time frame allows us to move at a relaxed pace and return to children who may need more time to adjust to a new setting. By learning more about your child, we will be able to place him/her with a teacher that will best suit your child's individual needs and form groups of children that work well together for the upcoming school year.

Children being evaluated for entrance into our nursery program (3 years old, birthdates between January 1st and December 31st) will be accompanied by one parent. After a short group activity children will be allowed to play with materials while being observed. An Early Childhood staff member will ask your child to come to a table and do some activities during the session for approximately 20-30 minutes. Even when your child is not at a table with an adult, he/she is being evaluated on his/her interactions with others. All children need to participate in the complete assessment session, which will end with a short group activity to say good-bye. (See ASFG policy for use of diapers, etc. in Early Childhood)

We've invited a parent into the nursery assessment to help the children feel secure and confident in this new setting. We recommend that you sit back and observe. Do not interact with your child unless he/she seeks this attention. If you feel your child would be more comfortable in the room without you, let the teachers know and feel free to sit outside the classroom.

Children being evaluated for pre-kinder (4 years old, birthdates between January 1st and December 31st) and kinder (5 year old, birthdates between January 1st and December 31st) will also be evaluated in group settings, but parents will be asked to wait outside the classroom. These sessions will be run similar to a class setting with children participating in whole group, small group, and individual activities. When not being evaluated directly by a staff member the children are being observed for their interactions with others. At the end of the session, your child will be brought to you in the waiting area we have set up.

Our early childhood staff will be taking careful notes on each child's reaction to our assessment questions. Final evaluations will not be given on the day of the assessment but reviewed later by our Admissions Committee. You will be notified of your child's acceptance or non-acceptance to our program by the Admissions Office.
